The Return of Persephone

The Return of Persephone

You never know when you'll get caught under a starry night with a special someone. It's always good to have a story and this one has always stuck with me.

Why we have seasons

Persephone was the product of an over-protective mother named Demeter. So much so that she kept her a far distance from such gift-bearing suitors as Apollo and Hermes. Persephone was a goddess of nature, one beautiful afternoon whilst picking flowers with her fellow deities Artemis and Athena – Hades the god of the underworld abducted the enchanting creature against her will.

When Demeter caught wind of her daughter's abduction she furiously scoured the earth with torches, and in her despair, the earth became barren allowing nothing to grow. It's only from the cries of the the people that Zeus was forced to insist Hades return Persephone.

Hades having to comply had a trick up his sleeve. He tricked Persephone into eating some pomegranate seeds. Because she tasted food in the underground she was forever obliged to spend a third of the year with Hades (winter months) and the remaining sunny and fertile months of the year above with her fellow gods.

This is why we have the change of the seasons.
