A Guide to Removing Yourself Online

A Guide to Removing Yourself Online

Today I've decided to tidy-up my online persona, and hope you find this a handy guide for yourself as well. Check back on this post as I will be adding instructions as I go.

Easily and quickly delete your user account from Websites, Social Networks and Mobile Applications and permanently remove your Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from Big Data by reaching Chief Data Officers (CDO) or Privacy Officers.

This list could go on forever, I'll be covering the popular parts of our online life.

EMAIL SUBSCRIPTIONS

These sure piled-up. There's the obvious unsubscribe me on the bottom of the pesky email, but I stumbled upon a real gem called unroll.me. They handle your email in a handy way by sending you a grouped email of your rollup (keepers) and lets you unsubscribe from the rest. I was surprised to see how many companies had my email.

FACEBOOK

Do not forget to check for the Websites you have joined using your Facebook account before starting to remove your account.
Download all of your data before removing your Facebook User Account.
Third-party Website(s) potentially affected by the removal:
All the third-party Websites you login with your Facebook User Account.

  1. Start removal request
  2. Check third-party connections
  3. Manage your email notifications
  4. Opt out your browsers

FACEBOOK APPS

Facebook tips: Go to https://www.facebook.com/appcenter/my?sort=date then scheck for old apps and maybe remove apps used more than 6 months ago, then send an ACCOUNT OR PII REMOVAL REQUEST to the app's publisher. As soon you want your account deleted from any Website where you have registered using your Facebook account, please, do not forget to remove the Facebook app! Do the same for connected accounts on Google, Twitter, Instagram...

GOOGLE

No one said this would be a click of the button. Start the removal process by clicking here.

INSTAGRAM

Don't forget to unistall the app(s) from your mobile device as soon your account is deleted.

Click Edit > I'd like to delete my account. Easy. Make sure to remove your Facebook app as well.

KLOUT

Klout made this process nice and easy. Access your Klout profile directly from profile settings. You will see an Opt Out option and a link to halt your score generation and delete your account. When you click on that link, you will see the confirmation on the next page and verify your intent to opt out of Klout.

Next go into your Twitter account and revoke access to Klout. Settings > Apps > Revoke Access to Klout

KRED

This was a little more hands-on. Send a removal request via Email to privacy@peoplebrowsr.com then remove the Facebook/Twitter app (if applicable).

MOBILE APPS

Check on your smartphone to see if there are some apps you haven't opened in months, decide if you still really need them, if not, uninstall them then send an ACCOUNT OR PII REMOVAL REQUEST to better protect your privacy by stopping data and location sharing from those uninstalled apps (you will also free some space on your device).

TWITTER

This is a little more detailed than the rest – so I suggest you follow the steps listed here.
