What Happened 1000 Years Ago?
With 2014 fast approaching I wondered what happened in 1014.
Most notably was The Battle of Kleidion which took place on July 29, 1014 between the Bulgarian Empire and the Byzantine Empire. It was the culmination of the nearly half-century struggle between the Bulgarian Emperor Samuel and the Byzantine Emperor Basil II in the late 10th and early 11th centuries. The result was a decisive Byzantine victory.
The sight of his 15,000 soldiers was so shocking Samuel died of a heart attack shortly after.
This is where Basil II, who would subsequently be known as the "Bulgar-Slayer" earned the front page for 1014 news.
Basil took 15,000 prisoners, divided them into groups of 100 men, blinded 99 men in each group and left one man in each with one eye so that he could lead the others home; this was done in retaliation for the death of Botaneiates, who was Basil's favourite general and advisor.
